Powered by an all-wheel drive and a unique boxer engine, Subaru Legacy is in the world off its own, among the several mini-size sedans competing favorably in the same sector.

Compared to two of its close competitors, Toyota Camry and Ford Fusion, Legacy is fuel efficient, in addition to its all-wheel-drive strength and it is capable of taking five passengers.

0-60 mph: progress and competitors

Legacy is not the best when it comes to the 0-60mph, as it slowly makes 0-60 mph in 8.6 seconds, and reaches quarter mile at 16.7 seconds.

These figures might be cool a decade back. However, in the present times, it is lagging behind 2018 Honda Accord EX-L 1.5T CVT that can pull an exact stunt in just 7.3 seconds and reaches a quarter mile just in 15.7 seconds (it is even faster with a manual).

The 2018 Toyota Camry XSE V-6 can even do better 0-60 mph in just 5.8 seconds and attaining the quarter mile in 14.4 seconds. The comparison is in favor of Subaru Legacy, because the Honda Accord has an advantage with its forced induction and the Toyota Camry wins due to the cylinder count.

But there is a better option for Subaru loyalists to explore, the Legacy Limited 3.6R trim with its impressive 256-hp flat-six. This luxury comes at a cost, an additional $5600 to the regular cost of $27,205 for the Legacy 2.5i Sport, which is under review here.

Engine specs

Since its launch in 2015, the latest Subaru Legacy has grown rapidly. Its unique advantage favors comfort at the expense of sportiness. Although most Legacy brands offer straight-line performance, which is quicker, the 175-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder boxer engine, is a good option.

According to an expert's observation “There’s some WRX dirt in there,” as was noted in 2018 Legacy 2.5i Limited First Test. “But this is much more luxurious. More like a WRX Town Car.” It's not too much to conclude that the Legacy brand inherits some features from its cousins.

For those seeking more power, 3.6-liter flat-six engine is up for grabs with a variable transmission in a continuous manner, and it’s a single box choice for the two powertrains.

Exterior and Interior Designs

Compared with the predecessor, 2018 model has a revised front-end grille, which is lower and broader. The maker also adjusted the rear bumper to accommodate the exhaust pipe.

In affirming its claims as winter-ready, Legacy offers the heating device located next to the wipers to prevent accumulation of snow during severe weather conditions.

The Verdict

Excellent safety package and an efficient all-wheel drive, but that's where the pros end. Legacy CVT is too quiet during operation and it doesn't sound like it looks. Lack of torque makes its CVT jerky and unstable even from throttle application.

The Subaru Legacy 2.5-liter flat four is not the best when it comes to power, but being all-wheel drive, it presents good handling and impressive grip.
