The Porsche 911 remains to be a quintessential sports car more than fifty years since it first appeared. It’s available in three trims: a striking Targa, a stunning convertible and a sleek coupe. The 911 owes its reputation to its powerful engines which deliver great performance and precise handling.
With horsepower ratings of between 370 and 450, the sports car gets from 0 to 60 mph in just 3 seconds. EPA estimates rate the car at 28 mpg highway. Since last year, Porsche has moved to full turbo. The base model features a 3.0-liter turbocharged flat-6. The Carrera boasts of a turbo-6 that generates 331 pound-feet of torque and 370 horsepower. The Carrera S, on the other hand, makes 368 pound-feet of torque and 420 horsepower. The base Carrera hits the 60 mph mark in 4 seconds. The Carrera S does this in 3.7 seconds. Both are with the automatic transmission. Further up the hierarchy, we have the new Carrera GTS which is just a step above the Carrera S. It churns about 450 horses that can be felt through a 7-speed-manual transmission.
The exhaust system is active, and thanks to the vehicles body material, the sound reaches the cabin uncompromised. The Carrera T provides a similar six-piece orchestra with fewer amenities and less weight. It comes with the base engine that produces 370 horsepower. The Turbo and Turbo S 911’s are Porsche’s best representations of grand touring cars. They feature a 3.8-liter turbocharged flat six that makes 540 and 580 horses respectively. Getting from 0 to 60 mph takes just 3 seconds. Race-equipped models include the GT2 RS and the GT3.
The former costs $300,000 and drives faster than more expensive supercars. The latter comes with the 3.8-liter which makes it a classic. The entire lineup features either a dual-clutch automatic or an exceptional 7-speed-manual transmission. The Carrera T and the GTS are available in manual only while the 911 Turbo and GT2 RS feature the automatic transmission dubbed “PDK”. The coupes offer great comfort over long distances and are great road trip vehicles. All trims have great steering. The latest 911s look wider and lower. This is due to the new horizontal elements and modified taillights that were introduced last year. The inside is fresh thanks to the attractive materials and good looking trims.
The center touchscreen and multifunction display remain simple. They compliment the car’s traditional layout. Consumers are expecting a new 911 soon. The car is fast, rewarding, civilized and yet surprisingly composed. Not very many cars can do what the 911 does. For 2018, consumers get up to twenty 911s, each spotting something distinct. Porsche has been rolling out a new variant semi-annually – something that other automakers are slowly emulating.
The 911 comes with a front architecture that is similar to that of the 718 Boxster/Cayman model. The hung engine and 2+2 seating arrangement make it a legendary vehicle in the automotive industry. Latest models are more of GT’s, and come more comfortable and larger to accommodate longer drives.
