As Nissan awaits to give the Nissan Sentra a complete overhaul, a few improvements are continually being added to the latest model. For 2019, the Sentra will feature a new and larger 7.0-inch audio display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. All but the Base model will come with the last two as standard features.
Most of the trims will be powered by a 1.8-liter inline-4 engine. It will be able to generate about 125 pound-feet of torque and 124 horsepower. This will be channeled to an automatic transmission (CVT) that may feature one long gear to improve on efficiency or have programmed gears. This, however, may not work well with steep roads and highway passing. The Base model will come with a 6-speed manual that may prove to be less fun to drive.
The Nismo and SR Turbo trims will be equipped with a 1.6-liter turbo-4 capable of generating up to 177 pound-feet of torque and 188 horsepower. The engine is similar to the one found in the Juke and it makes the smaller Sentra fun to drive. The Sentra SR Turbo will allow drivers to experience all the engine power through a 6-speed manual transmission. The automatic transmission is an option that will feature stepped gears.
The Sentra suspension system received a major upgrade in 2016. The 1.8-liter-powered models come with this as standard. For an improved steering formula and much firmer springs, opt for the Nismo or SR Turbo.
The Base model features great handling. This is thanks to its exemplary steering capability. The Sentra, in general, is also able to ride fairly smooth without fuss or excessive rolling. The new springs also offer a far much better-controlled motion.
The SV and S trims come with rear drum breaks that give a confident drive. They, however, have a distinct nosedive.
The Sentra exterior borrows its sheet-metal characteristics from the Altima. There’s a body line running from the tail to the nose as turbocharged trims feature daytime LED lights, side sills, spoilers, and accents. These help to distinguish the car from conventional compact cars. Unlike the Mazda, the Sentra makes no effort to separate the front axle from the cabin.
The interior is plain but offers great utility. The dashboard features a 2-tier arrangement and flows gently while maximizing space. With a mix of plastic and matte material, the cabin looks better. There’s however, no effort to hide the light budget. Trims that cost higher are not spared either.
The 2019 Nissan Sentra isn’t a famous sedan. Neither does it top the sales chart. Depending on one’s needs, however, it could be worth a look. The entry-level S is meant to appeal to those on a budget. The Nismo is for car enthusiasts that love better handling and enhanced performance.
No matter the choice, the Sentra offers great room for passengers and cargo. It also offers a smooth ride and easy-to-use controls. There are, nevertheless, a few shortcomings. The Nissan Sentra isn’t all that fun to drive. Neither does it feature any hi-tech features like its competitors. All in all, its performance and contents justify its price and looks.
