The Nissan Altima hasn’t become the driver’s darling like other models the Japanese brand has put out in recent years, but that doesn’t mean it has nothing to offer. Depending on the trim, you get a 179hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder or a 270hp 3.5-liter V-6, which is more than enough for urban driving. It features a top speed of 121 mph and a 0-60 acceleration in 8.2 seconds, but it does have some reported problems. Mainly, the engine doesn’t run as quietly as one could wish, and the vibration could be a little too strong for your taste. However, there are also big advantages for this design, such as the excellent performance of 38 mpg.
Another common complaint about this model is the CVT. It is well known that not all drivers are CVT-enthusiasts, and even if many Japanese brands usually offer the buyer the choice between CVT and standard automatic transmissions, it is not the case with the Altima. Luckily, the latest models Nissan has put out have improved a lot, so much, so that standard shift ratios sometimes mimic automatic or even manual transmissions.
Another aspect of the Altima that has improved over the years is the handling. The steering is accurate and easy-going, although it is a little lacking in quick response and off-center turning. The shock absorbers and springs absorb much of the vibration transmitted from the wheels, and SR Altimas offer upgrades such as a damper tuning and anti-sway bars. Sharp turns are safer and easier thanks to the understeer control system that helps control the front wheels.
Regarding the brakes, the Altima provides a great response from the pedal and efficient performance. Also, it has incorporated an emergency brake system that automatically stops the car when an imminent collision is detected.
But enough about engine and control specs, what does the Nissan Altima look like? It has changed its outside design quite drastically even since the first models came out into the market. From the very beginning, the look causes a good impression. The hood has curvy and strong lines, the front fenders have been updated, and the front features a wider grille. The trunk lid and the taillights have also been redesigned to match the new feel of the Altima, and both front and back feature renewed bumpers. Its design somewhat resembles other Nissan models such as Altima, as well as similar cars from other brands, to be honest.
The inside of the car is very comfortable and wide enough for the passengers to enjoy the ride. There are no big highlights on the dashboard or upholstery features, except perhaps the control screen with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay software platforms available, and the remarkable console storage.
