Over ten years ago, the conventional sport-utility vehicle was met by another competitor – the large crossover. For a company initially known for building truck-based SUVs and trucks, it was only natural for GMC to join the craze. The 2018 GMC Acadia is the latest model in the automaker’s car-based utility line.
The Acadia was redesigned last year. It now comes with a lighter body, fuel-efficient engine, and a smaller structure. GMC saw it best to compromise on cargo and passenger room but improve the fuel economy and handling.
The three-row mid-size crossover comes with a 2.5-liter, inline 4 that is able to generate up to 188 lb-ft of torque and 193 hp. Unlike its competitors, the base model comes with no turbocharger but fits well with the standard six-speed automatic transmission.
All other trims apart from the Acadia SL come with a tranquil 3.6 liter V6 that produces 271 lb-ft of torque and 310 hp. All the power is transmitted to the chassis through a 6-speed auto transmission.
The all-wheel drive is optional, but the front-wheel-drive comes standard in the sun belt. All trims can be configured according to the desired mode. The control knob at the center console allows drivers to choose between off-road, towing and sports mode. In the all-wheel-drive version, additional options for either 2 or 4-wheel drive is included. The steering wheel is thickly rimmed and weighted nicely to deliver excellent handling.
Most models within the line come with 18-inch wheels with the SLT having optional 20-inches. The suspension is built to handle rough terrain perfectly. It is important to note, however, that the Terrain models lean more on appearance than performance. They only provide extra capability when set to off-road. This is due to an upgraded traction control mode.
The Acadia’s sitting capacity shows that the third row was not built as a prime seating area. The wheels give the mid-sized crossover a truckier look with few wasted curves. The rear taillights are huge and separate from each other using a chunk of chrome. All Terrain models come with a dark finish and exclusive wheel designs. The Acadia Denali takes the bling a notch higher by introducing shiny pieces across the exterior and an elaborate grille.
The interior is satisfactorily impressive and can be configured to several shades. The symmetrical designs, however, bring out a rather backward ambiance. The 2018 version also comes with standard five seats that can be upgraded to provide a six to seven seating capacity.
