The 2017 Dodge Viper is in its last generation. To commemorate this, Dodge is providing 5 special editions. These are, however, sold out. Nevertheless, you can build your own Viper as there are 24,000 custom stripe colors, 16 interior trims, 16,000 exterior color variations, 3 brake packages, 11 wheel options, 4 suspension options and 7 aero packages to choose from. This make it possible to configure your Viper in over 50 million ways.
The naturally motivated 8.4-litre V10 churns 645 hp and 600 lb-ft worth of torque. The Viper is a rear-drive beast. The engine has been fixed to a six-speed manual transmission. EPA ratings estimate that the Viper showcases 12/19 city/highway fuel economy.
Top speeds come in 177 mph for the ACR version and 206 mph for the SRT trim. According to Dodge, all 2017 Vipers hit 60mph in about 3.5 seconds. This depends on whether the car is in track or street mode.
Dodge had to fit in large wheels to accommodate the bigger 15.4-inch carbon ceramic front brakes. The motorsport shocks fitted under are adjustable, both in height and damping, and weigh way less than the standard units. They are also stiffer than those in the Viper TA.
The latest Viper tilts a little towards the luxury side. It gets better appointments than its predecessor which didn’t have much to show for the interior. It comes with air conditioning, lightweight carpeting, three-speaker stereo and a full Uconnect screen.
The Dodge Viper is made more for the race track. It’s super-fast, aggressive, harsh and a lot of fun. However, it’s an ugly machine to commute in. The ACR starts off at $121,990, making it a high-priced car to budget on. The alternative and even faster Porsche GT3 RS should be a better replacement. However, for those who want to own one for prestige and don’t mind a little pain, the Viper wouldn’t be a bad choice.
