Drivers might find an odd sweet spot in the Dodge Durango, which sits in between a family sedan and a full truck. Faithful to its particular company philosophy, when introducing the Durango, Dodge dismisses continuous upgrades and novelties and sticks to a proven formula with little changes over the years. This has advantages and disadvantages, of course, and when you choose a Dodge SUV you are at risk of being stuck with an outdated model that doesn’t live up to the competition, but at the same time, somehow Dodge has managed to craft a couple of models that stand the test of time better than many others, and the Durango is no exception.
This powerful mid-tier SUV combines slightly aged sturdy looks with a reasonably good handling and a comfortable interior. You can transport up to seven people and tow a maximum load of 7,400 lbs depending on the build.
The standard engine set for the Durango might be a bit underpowered for the mighty, 5,000+ pounds of the vehicle: a 3.6-liter V-6 that puts out 293hp. Nothing bad for a model of its kind, but if you want to get a real kick forwards, then you should opt for the 5.7-liter V-8 that the most powerful trims have to offer to date, sporting 360 hp and reaching 60 mph in 7.4 seconds, together with a great 8-speed automatic. This way, most SUVs of the competition will have nothing on you.
An even stronger V-8 is coming into the scene, a 6.4-liter that puts out a dazzling 475hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, turning the upper tiers of the Durango into one of the most powerful SUVs of the segment, reaching 60 mph in only 4.4 seconds and towing up to 8,700 pounds. This option will be available for the Durango SRT.
The Durango is a great option for those who want to enjoy the power of an SUV with the easy handling and steering of a family vehicle. The wheel is easy enough to control, although it can get a bit stiff in some trims, so remember to bear that in mind. The general look is in-between a utilitarian truck and a family caravan, with square, compact shapes, and harmonic horizontal lines. The design changes slightly between trims.
The strong influence of a family car is mostly felt from the inside of the Durango, with a cabin design that pretty much resembles any sedan more than an SUV. The dashboard is neat, and its design is very intuitive and minimalist. Standard upholstery is made of fabric, but you can opt for leather upgrades, especially in the most expensive end of the scale.
