The Dodge Avenger is a midsize sedan that’s behind its times in design and in desirability. It’s a discontinued vehicle that you can mostly find on rental fleets, which says a lot of its qualities.

It’s not that the Avenger doesn’t have its merits, but even when reading the spec sheet, you’ll find some annoying things, like the 4-speed automatic transmission in the base model. Last time we checked, 4-speed transmissions were a thing in the 90’s.

 

Dodge Avenger 0-60 and Quarter Mile

If you are into spirited driving, the base 2.4-liter four-cylinder should be avoided. This gasoline engine has 173 horsepower and sends it all through a 4-speed automatic transmission, or an optional 6-speed automatic. Performance, of course, isn’t stellar, nor is its responsiveness on the road – this model is best to be avoided.

The more powerful Pentastar V6 engine with 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque is much better suited to the car. The engine pulls well from low revs and can accelerate the car quickly. It comes with a 6-speed automatic gearbox, that’s much more responsive and fast, but still not as smooth as others in its class. The V6 is also very refined, unlike the four-cylinder that sounds coarse.

The V6 Avenger is fairly good on the road, providing the driver with the much-needed feedback, but there is a lot of torque steer when accelerating hard – this is still a front-wheel-drive vehicle and big engines almost never play well with the front wheels. Ride quality is good though - passengers won’t complain a lot, even on rough roads.

 

Exterior & Interior

The Avenger got a big refresh for the 2011 model year, that made it much more attractive. Well, it’s certainly not as attractive as the name suggests, but as far as midsize sedans go, this is a looker. It has some of the design flourishes of the larger Charger that give it a sporty and muscular appearance. The front end is especially convincing, with an aggressive and angry look that will certainly win men hearts.

Despite being an old model now, the Avenger has a very clean and modern looking interior. The materials are also very good – almost every surface is soft to the touch and looks like it will last. Some may not like its minimalistic appearance, but buyers in this class often like designs like this, as they tend to age better.

 

Conclusion

The Dodge Avenger is one of the cheapest midsize sedans out there, which puts it on the shortlist for many people. However, most other models in its class are much better to drive and have even higher quality interiors. The base engine is also underpowered, especially if you opt for the 4-speed automatic transmission, that’s best to be avoided. The V6 engine may be sweet, but it is much better suited to other cars in the Dodge lineup, as the Avenger’s chassis is not the best around and the front wheels have a hard time sending all the power to the ground.
