The BMW 5-series is no longer the peerless driving machine that it used to be. A quick drive in the 550i reveals a light steering and a weak braking system. Hybrid and diesel engines are available in the M550i and 540i. The hybrid delivers 38 mpg and 18 miles of range in electric mode. There are a standard 10.2-inch navigation and an infotainment system in all trims with Apple CarPlay being optional.

BMW has three new powertrains for 2018: the turbo-diesel 540d, the performance beast M550i, and the plug-in hybrid 530e. The 550i features a 4.4 liter, twin-turbo that makes it the athlete in the series. It comes with a standard all-wheel-drive system and an 8-speed auto transmission. It hits the 60 mph mark faster than the Mercedes AMG E43 and the Audi S6.

The 530e plug-in, on the other hand, features a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor. It produces 248 hp and gets from 0 mph to 60 mph in just over 6 seconds. Its fuel efficiency is commendable. Coming in last is the 540d with a 3.0-liter inline-6 that churns 261 hp.

The 5-series maintains its reputation with its civilized interiors. There are a few upgrades for the 2018 models including spacious rear seats and new tech features. The Luxury Seating Package available for the 530i ($4,050) and the 540i ($2,600) models add onto the 5-series Nappa leather seats. Buyers can also get Merino leather ($1,000) instead, through BMW’s Individual Customization Program. An extra leather-wrapped dashboard goes for $1,200 while the gray faux-suede headliner prices at $1,000.

The comfortable interior provides more space than what other automakers are providing in competing luxury models. Front and rear seats are accommodating to both the driver and passengers. The back bench can fit three people comfortably.

The 540i comes with a Display Key that allows drivers to control fan speeds, driverless parking, remote starting and to enjoy a unique feature that lets them get the 540i into or out of a parking space while controlling it from the outside. The Display Key, however, requires regular charging via an inductive charging port or USB.

The 5-series continues to distinguish itself as a BMW with the 4-ring headlights and kidney-shaped grilles. Only a few keen observers will be able to distinguish this year’s model from those of the previous years. The car, however, loses out when it comes to new design and style. Other automakers such as Jaguar, Volvo, and Mercedes-Benz are introducing new and cutting-edge designs for competing models.

There is a wide range of wheels, colors and trims to choose from. These allow buyers to add different touches to the looks of their BMW 5-series.

As other competing manufacturers strive to reach BMW’s handling and performance with the 5-series, BMW seems to be taking a back seat on that and concentrating more on luxury. The once incredible driving machine is now a cruiser with lots of space for cargo and passengers, a strong and efficient engine and posh material. This could be as a result of the dynamic shifts taking place within the market forcing automakers to be innovative.
