One would argue that the Audi TT is nothing but a Golf in a posh frock. This couldn’t be any further from the truth. It is more stylish and refined, thanks to an all-aluminum construction that makes it lighter and more engaging.
The exterior doesn’t offer much. It only got a mild facelift with curves being turned into angular creases. The badge has also been moved to the bonnet from the grille. Audi offers speed in the Audi TTS and more speed in the Audi TT RS.
The TT still holds the unmistakably heavy engine that’s been witnessed in successive VW cars. Despite there being a delay in the car’s torque peak, the 220 hp manifests well at 6,200 rpm. It enables the car to get from 0 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds. It covers quarter of a mile in 13.8 secs at 99mph. This is 0.6 seconds faster than the GTI in both metrics. A sound actuator gives it a deeper rumble when in dynamic mode.
The TT has swift dual-clutch shifts that are much smoother than conventional automatics. Kickdowns are also instant, with the manual mode producing a downshift in less than a second. In the U.S., the TT can be obtained with Quattro or DSG.
The interior is inspiring, featuring a Virtual Cockpit that replaces conventional buttons with a configurable screen, climate control, high-quality material and comfortable and adjustable seats. The rear seats are ornamental but make visibility a problem through the pillars. This has, however, been a standard issue since 99’. We might say that we are already used to it.
The TT has the shortest wheelbase in VW’s super-versatile MQB platform. It, however, negotiates corners well for a 4WD. The Quattro system is able to push the entire torque to either the front or rear wheels. A switch to the dynamic mode limits this to the rear. Quattro then allows the TT to negotiate throttles effectively by pushing the torque aft. This relieves the pressure off the front and allows for a smooth turn. The Drive Select offers quite a rough ride, something you wouldn’t expect in a car with such handling.
The TDI is a good choice for a company car. It has extraordinary fuel economy at 67.3mpg and hits the 60mph mark in slightly above 7 seconds. Its general mechanics are what you’ll find in a Golf, Leon, A3 and Octavia. The hatch brigade is expected to fine tune any troubles that appear in these. With the S trim, you get a horny body kit and smart LED lights, but miss out on the 20-inch wheels and bigger suspensions. Audi nailed it with the coupe model, but forgot to accompany the improvements with a change of looks.
