Acura produces terrific cars, which is no longer news. Acura MDX, a three-row midsize crossover, is a great toy that shares some features with Honda pilot.
However, MDX comes with better upgrades that allow it to compete, with models like, Volvo XC90, Infiniti QX60, and the luxurious Lincoln MKT, without ignoring Buick Enclave among the top cars in contention.
Being Acura's best-seller, MDX is also one of the best selling vehicles in its category of luxurious three-row crossover in the auto market.
0-60 mph: progress & competitors
Most units of this car come as the front wheel, but for this review, the all-wheel drive was used. Clawing the pavement on all the four wheels, the MDX was so amazing to sprint from 0-60 mph in just 6 seconds. It was an incredible result for the car, which can seat seven persons.
The primary secret of MDX Sports Hybrid is that it benefits from the three-motor hybrid system, a regular feature system in the NSX supercars in the Acura Halo's brand. Two out of the three motors, in all four-wheel MDX hybrids, propels the rear wheel of MDX.
The powertrain generates a massive 321 HP by using the three motors powered by a 3.0-liter V-6 engine. The hybrid MDX can even go 35 mph on electric power, but the beauty of the hybrid is that it can shoot from 0-60 in just 5.7 seconds, faster than other competing models except for the Audi Q7.
Specs of the Engine
Acura finally revised its MDX product in 2017, three years after its launch, upgrading many features like the styling and equipment. However, the most prominent addition is the "Sports Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system," standard in NSX supercar and the RLX sedan.
Deploying seven-speed and dual-clutch transmission, which the maker combines with a 3.0-liter V-6 system and an integrated electric motor to drive the front wheel, makes it a speedy beast on the road.
In MDX Sports Hybrid the two systems work in unison to produce 325 horsepower. Unlike in the conventional models, powered by 3.5-liter V-6 that can only generate 290 horsepower in front wheels or four-wheels using a nine-speed auto transmission.
The exterior and interior design
For its class, the headroom is below par; it may be due to the front sunroof that is standard. Unlike other competitors that offer more space in each row, MDX is a little bit cramp, with less legroom.
Second-row passengers will like to recline the seat back to be comfortable, but it will add to more problems for passengers in the third row, which is already too tight.
The Acura made a change to the grille, which was a subject of much ridicule in the previous iterations. The headlights are superb and allow MDX stand out.
The Verdict
The MDX proves to be a good bargain in the crowded segment of the market and can compete heartily with its competitors. Although not on the cheap side because it's well equipped, the price tag is still better than its rivals. Exciting car and fun to drive, the hybrid powertrain adds icing to the cake.
