The Toyota Tacoma presents a good range of options for drivers, from more street-oriented configurations to the adventurous off-road trims that are more than suited for crossing unpaved terrain. Wild terrain has nothing on even the most urban Tacomas. This is the strongest attribute of all Tacoma trims, but what’s the downside? Well, if gallons per mile are a priority for you, there are better performing models out there, but most drivers agree the major setback for them is the odd-shaped interior with slightly tight seating space and a dashboard that could use some redesign work.

The Tacoma comes with many engine arrays, but the standard is a 2.7-liter inline-4 that pushes from 0 to 60 in 7-7 seconds, up to 159hp and a 180 lb-ft of torque, and 6-speed transmission – manual or automatic, you name it. However, there are more powerful engines you can choose, and the disadvantages are far below the advantages, especially when it comes to fuel economy. For that reason, we suggest you opt for the 3.5-liter V-6, putting out much nicer 278hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, and you still get to choose whether you want your 6-speed manual or automatic.

The strongest build of the Toyota Tacoma hauls 1,620 pounds in the bed and tows up to 6,800 pounds.

Now let’s discuss the suspension. The basic setting has been improved for most models since the Tacoma first stepped into the market, and how these trucks feature double wishbones and coil springs that absorb much of the terrain shock. This helps compensate the stiffer build when compared to previous versions. Suspension slightly varies from trim to trim depending on each model’s practical orientation. Off-roaders are the least comfortable and most bouncy when on the highway, but once you leave the path and venture into wild terrain, the control dials and wheel articulation provide a reasonably smooth drive.

Above we mentioned that the strongest of the Tacoma features is the off-road and engine prowess, but the downside was the interior design. Now let’s expand on that. The cabin itself isn’t poorly designed and is mainly functional, but we can’t help to find the aesthetics a bit jarring, or at least oddly put together. Color accents here and there and strange combinations of materials somehow undermine its straightforward horizontal dashboard design. The Tacoma features an infotainment system with touchscreen functionalities, but nothing shines here either.

Regarding the exterior design, the Tacoma is sturdy and square-shaped, which communicates its functionality without much elegance. The latest designs feature a higher contour line, a three-piece rear bumper and an angled front grill that adds some dynamism to its lines.
