In an era where crossovers and SUVs take over the automotive world, minivans are a body style that takes probably the biggest hit. In reality, they shouldn’t. Minivans offer much more space inside, more practical seating layout, more space for cargo, sliding rear doors that can open in a tight parking lot… You get the idea.

The Toyota Sienna is a staple in the minivan world, thanks to a reputation for quality and reliability. It’s also the only model in its class with an all-wheel-drive system, which makes it the go-to choice for buyers who live in areas with heavy snow throughout the year. The Sienna has some other tricks up its sleeve, like the Toyota Safety Sense advanced safety equipment that’s standard across the range. These unique advantages keep it fresh, even though it’s the oldest model in the minivan class.

Toyota Sienna Performance

The Sienna is offered only with a 3.5-liter V6 with healthy 296 horsepower, paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. As the numbers suggest, this combination provides ample power for overtaking and merging into highway traffic. The gearbox can sometimes be hesitant to downshift, but overall it changes gears almost imperceptibly and smoothly, which is much more important for a minivan driver.

The suspension is a little firm though, especially when compared to newer competitors like the Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey. Toyota also offers the Sienna with a Touring suspension that should tight things even further and make the driving more dynamic, but the Sienna never was and never will be a sports car. The only good news is that the ride isn’t spoiled that much compared to other trims in the range.

Buyers will definitely be attracted to the all-wheel-drive models, especially those who live in areas with bad weather. The Sienna is the only minivan that offers such a system and we can confirm that it can help in snowy conditions. That said, you should avoid driving off-road with the Sienna at any time because it simply doesn’t have the ground clearance.

Exterior & Interior

Toyota tried to cheer things up a bit with the latest redesign of the Sienna and they largely succeeded. The 2018 Sienna looks sporty and aggressive in the front and distinctive in the back. The overall shape didn’t change though and it’s here where the Sienna shows its age. Competitors like the Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey are much more interesting to look at.

Inside, the Sienna gained a refreshed dashboard with better looking and higher-quality materials throughout. The central console is easy to use, with big buttons and good layout, but the 6.1-inch infotainment system leaves a lot to be desired and is not equipped with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. That said, the Sienna still has ample space for passengers and cargo, even though the Pacifica and Odyssey have it beaten on that front.

Conclusion

The Sienna may not be the newest and it’s certainly not the best minivan overall, but it has a unique set of characteristics that help it stand out from the competition, like all-wheel drive and a standard Toyota Safety Sense, which includes systems like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure warning.
