The Toyota 4Runner’s basic exterior structure tells you that this car has been here for a long time. Its earlier models that were produced from 1984 were nothing more than a Toyota pickup truck with fiber-glassed shells. The vehicle has gone ahead to receive lots of independent redesigns, with major ones being witnessed in the 2003 model. Currently, it’s a sports utility vehicle whose order and form leaves much to be desired. It does, however, feature some of the latest innovations including automatic emergency braking, blind-spot motoring, and lane-departure warning.

The 4Runner is built for the off-roaders and those who wish to experience tow ratings of up to 5000lb. This is to be expected as the vehicle shares its DNA with that of a pickup truck. For those used to swanky crossover interiors and smooth rides, the 4Runner may prove to be a huge adjustment. It’s only available with a V6, 4-liter engine that churns out 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft worth of torque. The beast is, however, sluggish thanks to its five-speed automatic shift.

The steering wheel is one to struggle with. Its center action is rather vague, requiring a lot of effort to handle on a long trip. The brake pedal isn’t impressive either. It requires hard pressing, an action that gets it to the floorboard. The 4Runner exhibits an old SUV’s demeanor. It has a 183-foot braking stretch and an unimpressive 0.76g grip. Driving the tires on an off-road causes the body to howl and lean disconcertingly.

There’s no turbo under the hood and the engine combines pretty basic features – such as in the TRD Off-Road - that labor hard in pushing the considerable huge 4Runner. The mass, however, fades during normal driving. The archaic V6 gets the beast to 60mph in 7.5 seconds, not bad a performance considering the 4Runner’s overall nature. It also gives a measure of 17mpg which corresponds to the EPA city estimate.

The vehicle has about 47 cubic feet of cargo space and a pleasant and easy-to-use dashboard. The audio and climate controls have large and knurled buttons that can be manipulated with ease even with wet or gloved hands. It does offer a more civilized experience compared to the Jeep Wrangler whose parts are built to come apart. Interior materials are not that advanced but are acceptable.

The Toyota 4Runner isn’t for every driver. A substitute for the TRD Off-road would be the TRD Pro or the basic Luxe limited and 4RUNNER SR5. All, however, pay tribute to how SUV’s used to run back in the day, with maximum off-road capability.

The 4Runner carries on year after year with minimal improvements and updates. Its fundamental concept remains unchanged. Due to the basic foundation of offering the best off-road capabilities, the most highly recommended model would be the TRD Off-Road Premium which gives provision for all the necessary off-road equipment such as KDSS that provides improved skill sets. What’s premium about it is that it includes comfort properties such as an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated front seats and outside mirrors and easy-to-clean vinyl upholstery.
