Some vehicles you buy for the practical value. Some, for the practicality and the ease, to drive and to handle. And some, just to feel powerful behind the wheel and turn heads wherever you go. The Lexus GS-F is built to look like a mid-tier sports car, and it shows at first glance. Its low front and small wheels make it a strictly pavement-only car; a rock in the road could break the paint coat, and we don’t want that, do we?

Besides the looks, which are undoubtedly sporty but not as impressive as other competitors in the segment, the spec range of the Lexus GS-F does leave some things to be desired for a sportscar. The figures themselves do not look very bad: a 5-.0-liter V-8 puts out 467hp and reaches a top speed of 168 miles per hour. The GS-F reaches the quarter mile in 12.9 seconds at 110.9 mph, yet accelerates from 0-60 in 4.4 seconds. However, when compared to other competitors, the GS-F falls short to similar models from other companies in basically every aspect. Perhaps one of the best aspects of the GS-F’s driving is its exquisitely put together 8-speed automatic, which shifts very smoothly and seems to understand correctly the message that the driver conveys through the pedal.

The gearbox is equipped with a torque converter and hydraulic cushioning, making the shifts seamless, even if a bit lagged for our taste. The handling has also been refined when compared to previous editions, and the wheel feels much more responsive to the hand. The suspension is more than enough to make the ride comfortable, even given the short distance between the chassis and the road. The driving experience is enjoyable, also if the GS-F could use a bit of a boost, power-wise. Inside, the dashboard design is a bit jarring, especially when, again, compared to other cars with a sport orientation.

The screen seems to hide in a cave, even if it’s on top of the board it’s not visible enough, and in 2018 a remote control with a stick instead of the standard touchscreen would seem to be out of the question, but apparently someone thought the joystick would be a good idea for this car.

We beg to differ. Dashboard aside, the cabin itself is comfortable, in spite of its questionable aesthetic choices regarding the upholstery and color palette. You will sit down and enjoy long rides on roomy seats and find little obstacle to your sight aside from the poorly-designed dashboard. The general design seems like an uncompleted callback to the days of yore, with some elements with a retro feel that don’t quite go all the way, which plays to the car’s detriment.
