The Lexus ES is the roomy luxury sedan that consumers are looking for. While other automakers compromise on space and branch out to keep up with trends and latest fads, Lexus hasn’t ignored this very important feature that consumers are constantly looking for.

The ES 350’s price nears that of the entry-level luxury sedan. It offers more features, a smooth V6, high build quality, and a luscious ride. However, there’s nothing much that will excite a driver. The handling is yet to match that of the competition. The sedan is luxuriously traditional and features little to no new technology.

The ES is available with either of the two powertrains: a 3.5-liter, FWD, 268-hp V6 that’s mounted on a 6-speed automatic transmission or an Atkinson-cycle inline-4 that comes with a two-motor hybrid transmission. The latter is available in the ES 300h. It also comes with an EV mode that shuts the engine off under light acceleration and at low speeds. It’s ideal for creeping into the garage at odd hours and for stop-and-go city traffic. The Eco mode improves fuel efficiency at the expense of performance while the Sport Mode does the exact opposite.

The former is smooth and quick. The sportier mode provides an extra urge. Toyota has managed to keep the noise and fuss away from passengers. The only downside to the ES is its spongy brakes. The ES 300h, for example, recaptures its braking energy through a regenerative electric-motor that blends with traditional braking if needed. The transitions are not as smooth as you’d expect in a modern luxury sedan like the Lexus ES.

The ES isn’t sporty at all. But, it can prove to be athletic if handled well. Thanks to its base 17-inch wheels and 18-inch versions, the driving is cushy, relaxed, and excellent. The ES remains quiet and composed while other manufacturers toughen their sedans to make them sportier, tauter and firmer. The only noise experienced is the growl that the hybrid produces on hard acceleration.

The 2018 Lexus ES just saw its 5th year of production. The current aggressive look was adopted a few years ago. The brash chrome and “spindle” grille remain to be odd features that feel like they were borrowed from elsewhere. The grille takes the shape of an hourglass and was it not for the spindle grille, the ES would go unnoticed. This year, the headlight surrounds come without the dark metallic paint.

The ES owes its spacious interior to the contours of its horizontal and wide dash. The instrument cluster and hooded high-mounted navigation system give the car some practicality and elegance. High-end models come with various species of wood trims giving a more authentic feel than what you’d find in a competing model.

Most ES trims feature the V6 with the hybrid rated at 45 mpg. Generally, buyers get a mixture of athleticism and elegance. The F Sport model handles and looks better. It’s also more fun to drive. Along with the stunning cabin comes Siri Eyes Free, Wi-Fi, Amazon Alexa, and Apple CarPlay. Safety features such as the automated emergency braking come as standard.
