Car buyers around the world fall in love easily with taller crossover vehicles. The thing is though, most of them look just like hatchbacks with more ground clearance, and that’s especially true for sub-compact SUVs. But, what if you make a sub-compact crossover that takes the styling cues from bigger SUVs? You get the Renegade, the smallest Jeep out there.

This funky and robust design theme helped the Renegade be one of the most popular crossovers in its class everywhere it’s selling – North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Real SUV styling and robustness are definitely what people like, especially those who want to emphasize their adventurous lifestyle and the Renegade scores highly in those regards.

Jeep Renegade Performance

With the Renegade, buyers not only get an SUV that looks the part but one that’s also pretty capable off-road. That’s especially true for the Trailhawk model with 4x4 four-wheel drive and redesigned bumpers with bigger approach and departure angles. The Jeep Renegade Trailhawk will certainly not replace you Wrangler, but when compared to other sub-compact SUVs, it’s the real off-road king. On a second thought, it’s probably the only sub-compact crossover that can venture off-road. The Renegade trails competitors when it comes to on-road performance – it simply leans too much in the corners and the ride isn’t particularly smooth.

The Renegade is offered with two engines – a modern 1.4-liter turbocharged and an older, naturally aspirated 2.4-liter gasoline engine. Between the two, the smaller engine is the livelier, especially when equipped with front-wheel drive thanks to the higher torque (184 pound-feet), even though the power is lower at 160 horsepower. This engine comes with 6-speed manual transmission and is a great choice if you want more fun behind the wheel.

The 2.4-liter unit pumps out 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. Overall, this engine is a little bit quicker, but it doesn’t feel like it on the road, because it isn’t as lively at lower revolutions. That said, if you want the 9-speed automatic transmission, this is the only engine you can get. Not that you’ll want to do that – the transmission hunts through gears all of the time and can quickly become tiring. We would go with the 6-speed manual.

Exterior & Interior

The exterior design has a lot of styling cues from popular Jeep models, wrapped up in a smaller package. We really like this approach as it makes the Renegade look retro and modern at the same time. A real game changer in the class.

The interior complements the exterior very well and looks very interesting. The oversized controls are reminiscent of bigger Jeeps and suit the overall design theme very well. Some may call it busy, but we think that the help of Italians in designing the interior (after Fiat bought Jeep) really paid off here. One thing Jeep can improve on is the quality of the materials – most plastics are hard to the touch.

Conclusion

Most sub-compact crossovers today offer a lot of space inside and good driving manners on-road, but none of them is good off-road. If good off-road performance is your thing, the Renegade is the only model in its class to choose from. It’s also spacious inside and can be had with a lively 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. In the end, there’s a possibility this whole article is superfluous and you’ve already fallen in love before reading it. We don’t judge.
