The GMC Sierra 1500 is more than just a decent, serviceable and strong full-size truck. It’s an adaptable utilitarian vehicle that you can customize to make it perfect for your needs. You get to choose the combination of body and carbon-fiber cargo bed, and there are three engines available so you can decide which is the right one for your case. You can balance performance, fuel consumption, and final list price, and get a truck that is right at that sweet spot that makes it perfect for each driver.

You have the standard engine configuration, and from there you can add more power and strength, up to over 12,000 pounds of towing. Most Sierras are powered by a direct injection 4.3-liter V-6, pumping 285hp and no less than 305 lb-ft of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 60mph in under 6 seconds and is capable of towing up to 7,600 pounds. The transmission is a 6-speed automatic.

If you want to go further with the power and the performance, you can opt for a 5.3-liter V-8. It still comes with the same 6-speed automatic transmission, but some of the most expensive trims have the 8-speed version, namely SLT and Denali. The not-at-all insignificant 355hp and powerful 383 lb-ft of torque allow this version of the Sierra 1500 to tow up to 11,00 pounds.

If you are along this line, you can opt for a hybrid version that in addition to the V-8 features an electric motor powered by a 0.45 kWh lithium-ion battery. This supplementary model is called eAssist and adds a bit of power to the overall performance of the engine – namely, +13hp and 44 lb-ft torque. However, most drivers tend to agree that this enhancement isn’t mighty enough to be worth the investment.

Now, if you like big toys, then go for the aforementioned SLT, and Denali trims, and opt for the 6.2-liter V-8. Get ready to feel the towing power of 420hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, and pull 12,500 lbs of load like it’s not a big deal. If you choose a Denali, you can also enjoy the special Magnetic Ride feature, which provides a dynamic suspension that adapts to the geography of the road.

The cabin is functional and well-designed. Dashboard highlights include a 7” touchscreen linked to an infotainment system, and the very operative display of controls allow the driver to access all functions with instinctive ease comfortably.

In spite of how heavy these trucks can be, the Sierra 1500 is very easy to steer and control when riding on the highway. More challenging paths such as urban roads and winding tracks don’t pose a challenge to the controls of the Sierra. From the outside, it does look powerful and heavy, with its wide and tall grille and broad bumper. The standard LED accent lighting provides both safety and appeal for driving at night.
