The 2018 Ford Focus ST isn’t the hottest kid on the block. Bearing much of what the regular Focus had, the ST still falls behind its competition. However, it still does uphold the charisma and power witnessed in its predecessor. It’s fun as ever to drive and delivers the same combination of practicality and performance that attracted consumers to it 5 years ago.
The Focus ST features a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that churns 252 hp. This is accompanied by a heavy warble that thrusts the driver onto the Recaro sports seats. All the power is channeled to the front wheels, making this little monster a little unruly sometimes. It’s available as a six-speed manual transmission. A dual-clutch automatic, however, would work well in widening the car’s audience. It offers perfect steering and handling functionality when driving in a straight line but tends to lick the tarmac at sharp corners.

He ST hits the 60mph mark in 6.3 seconds. The mud-and-snow tires allow it to cover an additional quarter of a mile in 14.9 seconds. This performance makes it a first amongst its predecessors. However, it falls behind the VW GTI, which covers quarter of a mile in 14.5 seconds and hits 60mph in just 6 seconds.

The latest 2018 Focus ST will feature a new mesh grille. Ford may go for the honeycomb styling which happens to be a trending feature amongst many performance-oriented vehicles. Its shape and size will, however, remain standard. The automaker also plans to add some red color to the “ST” badge.

The Focus saw an overhaul in 2015, and the changes made could be felt in its new profound handling and smooth driving. Most of the changes took place at the front as Ford equipped the Focus with stiffer bushings, springs and a sub-frame. This helped eliminate some of the choppiness experienced during its launch. The 2015 redesign also got rid of the harshness similarly experienced in the Mini John Cooper Works and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

The steering also saw a revised version. It is currently electrically actuated through a novel flat-bottom steering wheel that enhances ingress and egress. This change is not easy to notice. However, the transitions are now smoother and the car does not pulverize the driver like before. The drive is much firmer than that of the GTI. Nevertheless, a change of tires could easily modify this.

When choosing to buy the Ford Focus ST, you’ll have to base your decision on only one version of the car since that’s the only one available. The optional ST2 and ST3 packages feature the Sync 3 infotainment interface. The Recaro seats, however, may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
