The Ford Edge crossover offers relaxed riding, ample cargo space and angled styling for the 2018 models. The engine is a V6 that churns 280 lb-ft of torque and 245 hp. It’s linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission that powers the front- or all-wheel-drive. The twin-turbo V6 available in the Sport trim generates 315 hp and has all-wheel-drive as standard. Additions include self-park, lane-keeping assist, a Sync 3 infotainment system, and adaptive cruise control.

The 2018 Base Edge comes with a 2.0-liter, turbo-4 engine that produces 275 lb-ft of torque and 245 hp when running on premium unleaded fuel. A 6-speed automatic transmission is available for the front- and 4-wheel-drive versions. Regular drops in gas lower the engine’s output to 220 hp but there’s less turbo lag and better power transmission than seen in previous models. Towing capacity is about 3,500 pounds, a big improvement if you consider the previous Ford Edge.

The midrange trim comes with a 3.5-liter V6 that produces up to 280 hp. It’s stronger than the base turbo 4 and reveals solid performance on the road. The Edge Sport comes with a 2.7-liter, 315 hp V6. The engine is capable of producing up to 350 lb-ft of torque and a corresponding pleasant exhaust note. It’s the same power drive behind the Ford F-150.

Unlike its rivals, the Ford Edge does not include the 7th, 8th and 9th forward gears. It, however, does not compromise on riding quality. Consumers have been provided complete gear control via the S mode and shift paddles. The great body control is thanks to the independent suspension and stiff body structure.

The ride control and smooth electric steering are similar to that of the Fusion. There’s a special way the Edge maneuvers curved roads without any fuss. The Edge Sport and Titanium come with adaptive steering which increases performance at low speeds and handles an increase in speed exceptionally well.

The Sport edition isn’t very comfortable to drive along choppy pavements and potholes. This is due to its big tires and wheels and monotube dampers. Brakes may seem a little touchy for new users but provide a reassuring and strong stop.

Ford didn’t do anything new with the Edge’s exterior. Common shapes and cues have been manipulated to provide an attractive look. The side features thick roof pillars while the front has enough rake. The grille is built proportionately to balance the front end. The rear appears more agile and lighter than that of the BMW X5.

The new cabin is more appealing to the eye. It features soft-touch materials with a tall dash that pays tribute to Ford’s last generation of SUVs. Since the 2015 overhaul, the Edge comes with knobs, switches, and buttons that feel good in one’s fingers. A high-resolution screen glows at the center console allowing the driver to control ventilation, climate, seat heat, and audio volume. Unlike its rivals, the Edge doesn’t come with lighter interior materials. There’s plenty of gloss-black instead.

After being in the US market for a while, the Ford Edge has been Europeanized. It’s part of the latest models that Ford adds to its European lineup. It’s the premium crossover built to battle the BMW X3, Volvo XC60, and the Audi Q5.
