Introduction

The half-ton Silverado 1500 pickup is as adept at weekday family shuttling as it is at home improvement hauling or weekend toy towing due to its flexibility. The truck wears its blue-collar work roots well, and bucket seats, high-grade leather, flashy wheels, high-tech features and, of course, a rumbling V8, can spiff the Silverado to near-luxury levels.

0-60 and Engine specs

In its base trim Silverdado provides strong acceleration even with a modest load aboard. The V-6 can tow an impressive 7,600 pounds and can also send power either to all for wheels or rearward by a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The 5.3-liter V-8 engine is smooth, predictable and provides efficient driving in real-world. Even though it doesn’t deliver a mountain of off-the-line power like Ford’s twin-turbo V-6.

A 6-speed automatic is standard for the V-8 but 2018 higher-spec Silverados are equipped with an 8-speed. The 8-speed’s buttery smooth shifts are notable, and it might seem thirstier on paper but in reality the numbers are about the same.

With the right option, the 5.3-liter V-8 can lug up to 11,000 pounds.
The Silverado has a 6.2-liter V-8 that’s optional on LTZ and High Country trims. It is surpasses the base 5.3-liter with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, and it works well with the 8-speed automatic. The maximum towing capacity is 12.500 pounds.

The Silverado is available across the country and its eAssist mild-hybrid pairs the 5.3-liter V-8 to a 0.45-kWh lithium-ion battery and a small electric motor that adds 13 hp and 44 lb-ft of torque. The eAssist earns better fuel economy and shuts off the gas engine during coasting and while at a stop, but there is no big difference in acceleration. Both rear-and four-wheel drive have eAssist powertrain and can only be specified on LT and LTZ trim levels.

Exterior & Interior

The Silverado’s various trim levels can be tailored to your personal style. High-volume LS, LT, and LTZs are festooned with chrome everywhere, mostly the tail, high vertical front fascias. Trims tone down things a bit for the High Country and Custom with more body-colored trim, which really works.

The basic pickup shape makes the Silverado’s sides and rears pretty plain. The integrated steps chopped into the rear bumper corners is a thoughtful, useful, and downright brilliant feature.

In the Silverado’s interior is a softly squared-off dashboard that puts 7.0- and 8.0-inch touchscreens up high where they’re easily visible. We like both the nifty toggle-style switches for certain controls and the proliferation of USB outlets on most trims plus the controls are exactly where we’d put them.

Verdict

The suave 2018 Chevrolet Silverado may not be a huge standout in one way or another but it does nearly all things well.
The bowtie brand has a truck that quiet and refined, and available in endless configurations even though locked in a Hatfield-MyCoy feud with crosstown rival Ford.
