BMW has decided to give the M2 model an early mid-life upgrade. Being less than two years old in the automotive market, the M2 now comes with what BMW calls a “Life Cycle Impulse (LCI)”. Simply, the car now features extra equipment and a raft of interior improvements. This is all in the aim to counter previous criticism that hit the model at its launch back in 2014. The automakers did, however, leave the most important part untouched – the way the car drives.

 

The M2 is a properly upgraded 2-series, coming with a mean front bumper and wide fat guards. A first look at it reveals a new menacing and aggressive demeanor with a maintained elegance previously seen in its predecessor. The fatter guards are a pleasant sight for sore eyes, possibly challenging those of the M4.

The M2 is smaller and lighter compared to its M brothers. However, it does feature a similar 3.0-liter turbocharged engine, tweaked to produce 365 hp at 6500rpm and 343 lb-ft of torque. This is 60 hp and 37 lb-ft less than the M3. The extra hardware, however, does give the driver a somewhat pleasant feeling while driving.

BMW automakers rarely ever compromise on power. The M2 hits 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds, delivering heroic handling, strong and precise brakes, a nicely weighted steering wheel and close-to-perfect body control. The engine is sweet, and can seamlessly rev to 7000rpm.

BMW’s M DCT doesn’t waste any second when shifting. It is seamless and does prove that computers are indeed better at shifting and clutching than human beings. The slick-shifting manual does, however, exhibit better clutch coordination and a linkage that pays tribute to previous M3 models. Unfortunately, it comes with a rev-matching feature that doesn’t turn off without taking the stability control with it.

The 2018 M2 is special. It adds sporting features onto the standard 2-Series coupe, coming with wide fenders, larger wheels and tires and prominent cooling ducts. The macho aura and extra aggression give it a unique sense of style, one that ranks high amongst the competition.

Its considerable performance calls for extra cooling, and for this, BMW added onto its signature twin-inlet grille big, angular ducts that sit comfortably upfront. The short spoiler at the back gives the dropping roofline extra style, giving the M2 a somewhat coupe look. The front fenders are well widened to deal with the wide tires underneath and M axles at the rear.

The interior is simple. The materials are without flair. While the M2 may not win any luxury awards this year, it still presents an ambiance that means business. It does, however, have special M surfaces including M logos for the gauge cluster, steering wheel, shift lever, door sills and a flawless look of raw carbon fiber.

The M2, being the cheapest in the M-badged range, does with-no-doubt deliver when it comes to providing a system that does it all without much help. Despite it being a downer when it comes to giving provision for every circumstance, it upscales its restrained talents, making it a more satisfying option in the M series.
