Keeping track of BMW requires you to pay attention to the badges. The BMW 440i is what you get when you want something better than the BMW 435i. It’s no longer a 4.0-liter but a 3.0-liter, turbocharged straight-6 powered BMW. It also comes with 20bhp more than the 435i, totaling to 321bhp.

What was formerly known as the 428i is now a 4-cylinder, 248bhp 430i. The 440i is as far as the 4-series goes. Next in line is the M4.

The aspirated 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 fitted in the 440 competes well in matters speed. It produces about 330 pound-feet of torque and 320 horsepower that get the car from 0 to 60 mph in just under 5 seconds. Compared to the Mercedes-Benz C43 and Audi S5, the 440i stands tall with buyers having the option of an exclusive manual rear-wheel-drive coupe that is not found in the other two brands. Neither will it be available in the Gran Coupe or convertible 440s.

The BMW 8-speed automatic transmission has always been a leader in the industry. It doesn’t change in the 440. Shifts are quick and agile and the 440 performs like a dual-clutch. The turbos pounce harder in the “Sport” mode as the automatic gears hold longer.

The 440 features the famous and meek BMW all-wheel-drive system known as the xDrive. It splits power 40/60 between the front and rear depending on available lateral acceleration, wheel spin, grip, and throttle position. Sometimes, all the power can be channeled to the front or rear if needed.

The current 440 responds better than its predecessor. The general setup is stiffer thanks to the M Sport suspension that comes as standard and the active dampers. The 4-Series behaves much like its younger brother the 3-Series. It’s composed and flat, and its body leans less compared to competing models. The wheels, however, feel heavier in the Sport and Sport+ modes and may need correction at lower speeds. The steering wheel also falls short when compared the rapid one found in the Alfa Romeo Giulia and the Mercedes AMG.

The current 440 doesn’t differentiate itself that much from what the 4-Series had going on in its interior and exterior. There are a few key differences in its proportions, nevertheless. The sport has a swept-back windshield and a long nose. The sides are more restrained than what we have in the rival Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

The Gran Coupe takes the trophy for having the most stylish and elegant interior. The distinct roofline and two rear doors add functionality. The price is also comparable and makes the trim worthy of a buyer’s consideration.

The BMW 440i is a pleaser for car enthusiasts fascinated by pace, elegance and handling antics. However, drivers might enjoy the 2-Series more as it offers more thrill. The 4-door 4-Series Gran Coupe also features better practicality when compared to the small style trade-off.
